Learn more about "CDO As A Service.com"
We believe in enabling any organisation to get value-for-money access to niche senior strategic data resources and expertise, without breaking the bank. Learn more about our story, our mission and who we are.
our story
The COVID-19 pandemic of 2019-2021 has taught us all one thing... it is possible to work remotely and still be as productive and efficient as before (if not more). Before the pandemic, senior strategic data personnel were difficult to find & resource in your local area. Plus, everyone was looking for full-time roles when the requirements were often only part-time initially. When the COVID-19 pandemic struck in 2020, we were all forced to remote work for our local clients.Working throughout the pandemic taught us that physical location is no longer a barrier. This is why we have transitioned from on-site direct client CDO engagements to a fully-remote model. This means that any organisation in the world, that needs some part-time assistance with senior data issues, can gain access to this expertise without having to try and find and secure a local niche permanent expensive hire. This is why we have embraced the "as-a-service" mentality; niche expertise delivered to those who need it, when they need it.This means that we can help as many organisations that need CDO assistance, irrespective of location.
our mission
Our mission here at CDO As A Service.com is simple. We want to give the best niche senior data strategy skills to the organisations that now need them, without needing to make a huge commitment to hiring expensive roles (and potentially costly in other ways).Being remote does not mean lower quality or less engagement. If anything, it's the opposite. You don't have to worry about having a full-time CDO who you're struggling to utilise, and you have the assurance that we will prompting you for the things that matter specifically to your business and data needs. We often call our offering the "goldilocks" of CDO's - it's not a full-time, always-on service. Conversely, it's not hard-to-reach or infrequent. Instead, it can be whatever you need it to be - any CDO-related service, to suit your budget, when you need it.Last, and by no means least, this is an entirely sustainable and environmentally-friendly approach. All need for travel, expenses and office space are completely removed. All of this expertise is reachable via a simple video call, in today's established & accepted remote working environment.

A broad range of CDO services
Every service you could possibly need from your remote Chief Data Officer, across these 4 categories:
STRATEGY services
DATA STRATEGY
AUDIT
Technology. A 360 degree data review of your applications, infrastructure (on-prem or cloud), integrations, master data, data repositories, current visualisations / reports and machine learning / AI.
Governance. Building business processes & frameworks to handle your data quality, reference data, data policies and operational readiness.
Culture. . Ensuring you have executive sponsorship & ownership of data. Identifying who are your business data owners.
Each of these would involve an extensive "as is" (current) and "to be" (future) data strategic review, and a subsequent easy step-by-step roadmap to address the gaps between all of them.
DATA BOW TIE
(DATA MODELLING)
Business Data Modelling. Building your ideal enterprise-wide & future-proof business data model. This will perfectly reflect your business, but will not be constrained by any current application system or technology.
Application System mapping. This is a detailed mapping exercise between your entire line-of-business application estate (e.g. CRM, ERP, POS systems) and mapping them against your business data model. This will allow the understanding of what data is needed from which applications in order to build your perfect data model.
Business MoSCoW Matrix. . Finally, this is the mapping of your business units / functions / processes against your data model. This is to ensure that each team gets 100% of the data they need, and not 100% of the entire data available.
DATA ROADMAPS & BUSINESS CASES
Strategic Data & Insight Roadmaps. . Building clear easy-to-follow multi-year roadmaps to build your strategic data technology, governance, management & culture. These will enable you to become an insight-led intelligent organisation.
Stakeholder Engagement. Ensuring that all key parties are involved and engaged - from Executive / C-Level board room engagement, to working with key business stakeholders throughout the organisation, current analysts and technology staff.
Cost/Benefit Analysis / Return on Investment. Ensuring that any proposed activity has key business stakeholder buy-in, and also has a support business case with cost/benefit analysis and accurate ROI projections - based on both tangible and intangible business benefits that have been agreed by the business.
TECHNOLOGY services
SOLUTION
DESIGN
Data Generation & Integration. Core to any solution is in understanding where your data is created or available (internally or externally). This includes understanding how to gain access to it in a secure, ethical & performant manner. Finally, establishing what approach should be used for automated integration against each data source (based on many factors such as data volumes and frequency).
Data Transformation & Repositories. The next key design stage is to efficiently transform the various raw data sources into business-usable data that is aligned to your organisation. This includes the need to understand both the nature and behaviour of the data & insight you need - to ensure that the correct data repository approach is adopted. This also needs to align to your wider IT / Digital strategies, as well as your budget.
Data Visualisation & Smartification. A great data solution is worthless if it cannot be used by the intended end-users and stakeholders, to positively drive and improve their business outcomes. This is why understanding how they need to use actionable insight from the data repository is of paramount importance. There will also be the opportunity to explore machine learning / AI opportunities (data smartification) to detect trends and patterns in your business activities that would have been previously undetectable without this solution.
TECHNOLOGY &
TOOL SELECTION
Industry Experience & Insight. Over 20 years experience across 50+ clients understanding data-related requirements and issues, and a legacy of data-enabled organisations. Decades of battle-worn experience as well as up-to-date knowledge of industry and current technology, including use of all Gartner 'visionary' magic quadrant recommended BI & Analytics solutions over the last decade.
ITT, RFP Processes & Supplier Selection. Advice on supplier selection for all aspects of your data journey, including professional services and software (BAU and project). Existing tools & processes for undertaking supplier selection, including invitations to tender (ITT) and Request for Quotation/Proposal (RFQ/RFP) documentation and processes. Also able to provide criteria scoring sheets, that enable accurate weighted assessment of options.
Commercials & 3rd Party Management. When a preferred supplier has been identified, it's time to initially engage and then build up an ongoing relationship. Assistance is available for initial supplier negotiation, contract preparation and terms & conditions review. Subsequent assistance available to manage the ongoing relationship with 3rd-party suppliers, including contract renewals, regular reviews & feedback, support ticket oversight and escalation point for urgent support issues.
GOVERNANCE services
DATA QUALITY & STEWARDSHIP
Data Quality. Ensuring that there are processes, data routines and reports in place to identify data quality issues (application or enterprise level), and flag these with the necessary business data owners.
Data Governance. Ensuring that data is given a voice and is recognised as a strategic asset to your organisation. Where necessary, set-up forums & steering committees to review strategic data initiatives / programmes & quality issues.
MASTER DATA MANAGEMENT (MDM)
MDM Solution Design & Implementation. Advice on identifying master data management requirements & issues throughout your business. Solution design of bespoke or off-the-shelf MDM solutions.
Approach to Reference Data & Other External Data Sources. Aside from providing strategies for your own internal data, advice can be provided regarding useful external data sources and where to apply reference data best practice.
DATA OPERATIONAL READINESS
Data Privacy. Helping ensure your data is treated in a secure & ethical manner - to ensure that data privacy laws such as GDPR are adhered to, whilst also giving you the maximum data analytical value. This will also include data archival and data retention strategies.
Non Functional Data Requirements. The slightly less exciting but equally important side of data are the NFR's. These include ensuring that data is secure, scalable, resilient and performant.
MANAGEMENT services
MENTORING & CAREER DEVELOPMENT
Team Leadership & 1:1 Mentoring. Core to the success of data initiatives in your organisation are the individuals who make up the teams who drive the culture of data. Where necessary, team building or individual 1:1 mentoring can be provided.

TEAM RESOURCING (PROJECT & BAU)
Org charts, FTE resource levels, job descriptions & interviews. Advice on the 3 sidess to your data organisational structure: 1.) the project team needed to build your solution, 2.) the BAU / DevOps / operational support teams and 3.) the end-user community.
Technical Project Team. Either interim or ongoing, what are the technical skills you need to initially build your strategic data solutions (in-house, near-shore / off-shore resourcing models)
BAU Operational team and cultural adoption throughout your company. Making sure that you have the right teams & resources in place to maintain, support & enhance your strategic data solutions and processes. This may even involve planning your permanent CDO hire.
PROGRAMME OVERSIGHT

Programme Direction & Executive Engagement. Working with your executive sponsors and steering groups to help envangelise the strategic importance of data. Assisting with business cases, ROI calculations & cost/benefit analysis.
Annual Audit Reviews. . After everything is successfully in place, you are still subject to change (your business, application systems or requirements). Therefore, it is highly recommended to perform regular / yearly reviews of your data solutions, governance, teams & culture - to identify any strategic course corrections or enhancements.
